Often, an aging family member requires accommodations only offered by senior living communities. Finding the most suitable one can be a challenge. To ensure that you're making the best choice for them, it is important to ask the right questions. Here are five questions to ask when visiting - or communicating with - a senior care facility.

  1. What amenities do you offer? Amenities - such as laundry service, entertainment and housekeeping - make life easier and more comfortable. When considering a senior living community, the availability and variety of such conveniences should be a key deciding factor.
  2. How do you foster a sense of community? A senior living facility should be inviting and comfortable. A resident should feel at home and confident in the community they are living in and the care they are receiving. Ask if group classes, games, and friendship-building events and activities are offered.
  3. What is the staff like? If visiting in person, conversations with different staff members could offer a great deal of insight. A tour will also offer an opportunity to observe their interactions with residents. Don't be afraid to ask facility management what type of training staff are required to have.
  4. Are transportation services available? Many facilities offer outside transportation to surgical services, dialysis, physical therapy, and other general medical appointments. Make sure what is being offered is in line with the potential resident's offsite medical needs.
  5. What are the costs? Cost is often the most important consideration for many people searching for the right senior living community. When discussing the financial side of it, upfront and hidden costs, payment plans, and contingency plans should all be part of the conversation.
