As we age, physical, mental, and emotional changes occur that can affect our wellbeing. However, being proactive and planning ahead for the golden years can make all the difference. Currently, nearly 90% of American seniors say they want to stay in their own homes as they age, which promotes life satisfaction, a positive quality of life, and self-esteem, according to AARP.

Aging in place

The National Institute on Aging defines aging in place as growing older at home as long as possible with the comforts that are important to you. As time goes on, supplementary services may be necessary to ensure those needs are met. Maintaining mobility, staying safe, and receiving outside medical care are just a few of the concerns many aging adults living at home can face.

Planning ahead

Being prepared is the key to peacefully and securely aging in place. For instance, financial planning should occur throughout life in preparation for the retirement years. However, as the years advance, there are other general considerations to keep in mind. You should:

  • Decide how you want to spend your retirement years
  • Consider the type of assistance and support you may need
  • Discuss health issues and combating challenges with your doctor
  • Consider changes that may need to be made to your home
  • Discuss and address issues and concerns with family members

Types of needs

Having access to the right care and support is vital for those planning to age in place. To ensure a fulfilling quality of life, the following potential needs should be considered.

  • Personal care - bathing, dressing, hygiene
  • Health care - doctor appointments, pharmacy pickups, in-home medical services
  • Financial - paying bills, purchasing for daily needs
  • Meals - cooking, ordering food, eating
  • Chores - laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping
  • Transportation - appointments, shopping, social events
