Easy Summer Fitness Ideas for Active Seniors

Summer is here! This is the perfect
opportunity to get outside and get some exercise.  Regular activity
every day is essential for living a healthy lifestyle. This summer,
we want to help promote movement, social engagement
and mental well-being. Lucky for you, several amenities at The
Birches on Maple will help motivate you to stay active this summer.

Go for a walk

Walking can be incredibly beneficial to
your health. Some of the benefits include improving heart health,
boosting mood, reducing stress and supporting brain health. The
walking trails at The Birches on Maple make a great place to enjoy
the fresh air while also getting in some exercise. The Carrollton
Greenbelt is also right there for you to enjoy. Safety tip: Don’t
want to walk alone? You don’t have to! Join our walking group or
grab a walking buddy and go have some fun. Walking is safer when
doing so with someone else.

Exercise your green thumb

Gardening is a great way to get some
movement outside. Our community garden is a wonderful opportunity to
enjoy quality time outdoors and appreciate nature by making your
space look beautiful. The garden is accessible and welcoming to
everyone, no matter your skill level. You can also enjoy the sense of
community that comes along with gardening side-by-side with your
neighbors.

Take a dip

Here at The Birches on Maple, we have
both an indoor and outdoor pool, making getting active easy, rain or
shine. The pool provides numerous health and lifestyle benefits.
Swimming and water aerobics reduce strain on joints while improving
resistance for strength building. These activities are also great for
heart health, as they gently increase heart rate and circulation.

In addition to health benefits, pools
are fun! They are a great way to relieve stress and socialize with
members of your community. Safety tip: Never swim alone.  Always make
sure someone is with you whenever you are swimming or hanging out by
the pool.

Make use of the courtyard space

There are so many activities that you
can do right here in our courtyard at The Birches on Maple to stay
active. Grab a chair and try some chair yoga or other stationary
exercises. Start your day outside with some gentle stretching to
prepare your body for the day ahead. Low-impact movements such as
this can promote balance, mobility and relaxation.  No matter your
fitness level, these are great ways to fill your day with mindfulness
and motivation.

This summer is the perfect opportunity
to connect with nature, movement and most importantly, with each
other. Here at The Birches on Maple, we hope to inspire you to
nurture your bodies as well as your community by getting outside and
staying active. To check out some of our classes and events
