According to the National Institute on Aging, research has linked social isolation and loneliness to higher risks for a variety of physical and mental conditions. If you are having difficulty coping with isolation, there are ways to boost your happiness and enhance your quality of life.
- Get involved in community activities - Most towns across the country have senior centers hosting a multitude of activities related to senior interests, promoting group fun and friendship building. Furthermore, there are always opportunities to volunteer in your community, which can be rewarding and provide a sense of purpose.
- Use computers and social media - Computers and smartphones keep you connected and provide a window to the world where you can read exciting facts, learn new skills, and/or share photos and information. Free video chat platforms, email and social media sites are excellent tools for communication and entertainment as well.
- Invite people over or go out - You might be afraid that inviting someone over for a visit will burden them. However, most people would appreciate an invite and enjoy your company. If you would rather venture outside of your home for companionship or adventure, though, low-cost rideshare services are readily available.
- Keep a journal or diary - Journaling can help you stay organized, achieve your goals, and get things off your mind. Writing down your plans for the upcoming days and weeks can build upon your confidence and reduce anxiety.
- Exercise - Exercise reduces stress, builds strength, and enhances mood. There are a variety of exercise programs that can be done at home with little or no equipment. If working out at home feels too lonely, consider joining a local exercise class.
