The Birches on Maple - Gardening

At The Birches, we believe that gardening is more than a hobby; it's a way to connect with nature, enjoy fresh air and engage in a fulfilling activity. Our community garden is open year-round, offering a serene space for residents to cultivate their favorite plants. Here are some practical tips to help you make the most of your gardening experience.

Choose easy-care plants

Consider low-maintenance plants like tomatoes, peppers, herbs, marigolds and zinnias to keep your garden thriving with minimal effort. Raised garden beds, like the seven new ones we've provided, make gardening more accessible and efficient. Remember, the plants you choose will need your care and attention.

Grow your own food

Experience the joy of growing your own fruits, vegetables and herbs. Not only will you enjoy fresh seasonal produce, but you'll also have high-quality ingredients for your meals. Consider planting tomatoes, leafy greens, strawberries or herbs. To reduce pesticide use, try companion planting, which is all about grouping plants with certain herbs or flowers to naturally repel insects. Use senior-friendly tools

Gardening should be a pleasure β€” not a chore. Use long-handled tools to minimize bending and reaching, and choose tools with thick, cushioned handles to ease strain on your joints and back. A good pair of gardening gloves will protect your hands, and don’t worry about getting a little dirt on your clothes β€” it's part of the fun!

Stay cool and hydrated

With soaring summer temperatures, it's essential to stay cool and hydrated. Drink plenty of water, wear hats and lightweight clothing, and apply sunscreen. Try to garden during the cooler morning or evening hours to avoid the midday heat.

Ask for help

Don't hesitate to ask for assistance with heavy or intensive tasks like digging, lifting soil bags or moving large pots. Our staff and landscaping team are always ready to help, ensuring the garden remains beautiful year-round.
