Meet the dynamic duo bringing joy to The Birches on Maple

At The Birches on Maple, residents don’t just find a place to live — they discover a community filled with friendships, fun and a sense of belonging. Much of this welcoming atmosphere is thanks to Jillian Walker, lifestyle director, and Lauren Helena, activities director, whose passion for senior living and personal touch transform every event, outing and class into a memorable experience. Together, they work tirelessly to create a community where every day is engaging, enriching and — most importantly — fun.
With more than 21 years of experience in marketing, special events, meeting planning and project management, Walker brings a wealth of expertise to her role. As lifestyle director, her goal is simple: keep the residents engaged mentally and physically. Her mornings begin in the independent living dining room, where she greets residents, gathers feedback and makes sure everyone knows what to expect from the day’s events. Throughout the day, she collaborates with Helena to curate a dynamic calendar filled with classes, outings and special events.
Helena’s path to senior care is as unique as her approach to activities. Having lived abroad in Germany and the Netherlands, she has been an au pair, a caregiver for her Opa — the Dutch term for one’s grandfather — and an English teacher. Upon moving back to the States, she began her journey in senior care by volunteering in memory care, eventually becoming activities director in three other facilities in the Southeast. With a background in music and theatre, she brings creativity to her role as activities director.
Walker and Helena work closely to ensure activities are tailored to the diverse needs of homeowners, independent living and assisted living residents. “We want this to feel like a true community,” Helena said. “These residents are more than neighbors. They’re friends and family, and our activities help strengthen those bonds.” Walker and Helena also take pride in creating opportunities for residents to explore the surrounding community by partnering with local organizations like the Carrollton Center for the Arts, Tabernacle Baptist Church, the University of West Georgia (UWG) and City Station. “Many people move here with a sense of dread, fear and sadness about what they’re leaving behind,” said Walker. “But once they settle in, they realize they’ve gained a new home and a social group that welcomes them with open arms.”
Together, Walker and Helena uphold a commitment to holistic wellness that spans six key pillars: physical, social, intellectual, spiritual, emotional and recreational. While The Birches on Maple has a strong foundation in physical health, social interaction and entertainment —thanks to its various partnerships and Tanner Health’s Get Healthy, Live Well fitness programs — both directors want to shift their focus on enhancing the intellectual, spiritual and emotional pillars as well. Their recent efforts include scholarly outings to UWG, trivia and game nights, a weekly resident-led Bible study and monthly church services. Additionally, they plan to introduce geriatric behavioral health services through Willowbrooke at Tanner to support residents' mental health.

Beyond entertainment, Helena plays an integral role in resident well-being, driving the shuttle bus to outings and accompanying them to doctor’s appointments when needed. She also holds a monthly Town Hall, ensuring residents have a voice in shaping their experience at The Birches. Whether organizing family nights or fulfilling special requests — like finding a restaurant that serves authentic German cuisine — Helena is committed to making every resident feel heard and valued.
One of Helena’s standout moments was fulfilling a resident’s request for a cabaret performance. As a pianist and singer, Helena embraced the idea and delivered a show that was personal and brought immense joy to the residents. “Seeing the joy of the resident who requested it and others’ faces light up made it all worth it,” she said.
Like Helena, Walker also loves watching residents connect, laugh and make memories, but one particular moment stands out. A resident recently broke several bones in a golf cart accident and was unable to play golf, which is one of his favorite activities. He beamed with joy as staff and fellow residents transformed the dining room into a putting green just for him. “It’s so rewarding to do something that seems so small yet impacts someone so greatly,” she said. “Seeing the joy on residents’ faces, hearing their laughter and knowing that they’re forming friendships — it all makes my job truly special.”
With future goals focused on enhancing the intellectual, spiritual and emotional wellness of the residents, their work is just beginning.
Walker and Helena share a deep passion for what they do, seeing their roles as more than just planning activities — they are building a community where residents feel fulfilled, connected and cared for. Whether through laughter-filled fitness classes, game nights, concerts or spontaneous day trips, they are redefining what senior living looks like.
“These people have lived full lives — gotten married, raised children, had careers and faced the challenges that come with all of those milestones,” said Walker. “Now, they want to be free of responsibility and have fun. We’re here to help them do just that.”
“We don’t just plan the activities here — we walk alongside our residents through some of the toughest moments of their lives, offering support and care,” said Helena. “At the same time, we strive to bring light to their days and create a strong sense of belonging.”
